To participate in the next Weekly Wednesday Admissions Chat, log into the chat any Wednesday from 12:30-1:00 p.m. (Eastern Time). Questions from today’s chat are included below:
Question: I’m an international applicant and wanted to know if there is a particular advantage in having a Skype interview over a telephone one, since the internet is not exactly reliable at the place where I work.
Answer: Darden prefers Skype to telephone. It is nice to be able to see the person we are speaking with on the other end of the line. If your internet connection is not reliable, and you are more comfortable with the telephone, you can use the phone. I suggest trying Skype, and if it doesn’t work, move to the phone. We understand that there can be problems with technology. We will work with you.
Question: Is there a lot to do in Charlottesville?
Answer: Yes — absolutely. First of all, keep in mind, that most people leave their communities to come to b-school in Charlottesville, so everyone is looking to form a new community. This creates an immediate bond with your classmates, so you will have many friends to explore C’ville with. C’ville is located at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and it is easy to go hiking, skiing and white water rafting without having to drive too far. We are in the middle of the Virginia Wine Trail and have close to 40 vineyards in the area, and we also have 3 breweries. The music scene is huge in C’ville bringing performances as large as Lady Gaga and Dave Matthews (who is from Charlottesville) to smaller more regional bands. We have many great restaurants and many cultural activities, especially being a university town. There is the Virginia Festival of the Book and the Virginia Film Festival that brings in big names and big crowds.
Question: Can you give me a bit of a breakdown about the curriculum and how flexible it is?
Answer: The First Year curriculum is pretty set. You will take core courses in accounting, finance, operations, decision analysis, ethics, leading organizations, management communication, strategy, marketing and global economies and markets. You do not have electives until the last term. The Second Year is much more flexible. You chose all of your classes, as they are all electives. And, we have many concentrations.
Question: On the work experience portion of the application, for fields like reason for leaving the previous job, is a descriptive response expected or is it just a brief response (i.e. 2-3 sentences)?
Answer: Brief explanations are expected unless there is a particularly complicated situation you feel we need to know about.
Question: Can you provide any sort of sense as to whether all the interview invitations have been sent out already?
Answer: We will be releasing interview invitations all the way up until the decision notification date (December 21st).
