With 18 teams from the US, Canada and Mexico arriving in Hanover, the stage was set for the annual  2012 MBA World Cup. Just like every year, there is no better setting then the Sachem Soccer Fields to host the tournament. The tournament began Saturday morning with the first game kicking off at 9 am. There were 4 divisions and the top two teams in each division advanced. Tuck lost in the finals last year to Columbia, so the second years were determined to win the title this year. The first years were just as ready and had set a goal of winning the cup two years in a row. The team had practiced throughout the year and everyone was ready for the big weekend.

Tuck’s team marched through the first round. They didn’t lose a single game and shutout every team they played. With momentum on their side, they were able to enjoy the night time festivities. The festivities started off with a BBQ on Tuck’s campus.  Rumor has it that over 400 lbs. of meat were purchased and grilled by Tuckies for the event. There was music, beer, sodas, and speeches by Dean Danos and the founder of Grassroots Soccer (www.grassrootssoccer.org). After the BBQ, everyone was invited to join in the IberoAmerican Fiesta. There were handmade cocktails from 8 different countries and a salsa instructor for those who wanted to learn to salsa dance. Eventually the fun had to end so everyone could rest up for the quarters, semis and hopefully the finals the next day.

Tuck came out strong in the quarter finals and continued by shutting out Yale SOM in the semis. With 5 (out of 5 games played) shutouts behind them, the finals were scheduled to start at 1pm. HBS had just beaten Columbia in a shootout and would be Tuck’s final match. For the final game well over 100 Tuckies came out wearing green and supporting the Tuck soccer team (a little home-field advantage.) When the ref blew the final whistle Tuck won 1-0! Another shutout and another great day to be a Tuckie! All the games I went to were fun to watch, but nothing beats bringing home the MBA World Cup trophy!!
