In March of this year I was attending the admitted students weekend at another b-school.  I was ready to sign on the dotted line, given the proximity of the school to my family and its great reputation.  I even dragged my wife and 2-year-old to that weekend to make sure they liked it.  However, something was missing from that weekend.  I just wasn’t impressed like I hoped I would be.  I knew I needed to make one more flight to Hanover for Tuck’s Admitted Student Weekend (ASW) to cement my decision.
Despite being bleary eyed from the Los Angeles to Boston red-eye, plus a 2 hour bus ride to Hanover, I couldn’t have been more impressed with Tuck.  The moment that really cinched it for me was during “Tucktails”, a cocktail hour where the T’13s and faculty welcomed the admitted students.
It was a hot day, so I had changed out of my business casual chinos and dress shirt into my L.A. formal wear – shorts, flip flops and a Dodgers t-shirt.  I figured I couldn’t get in trouble, I was already accepted!  Anyways, I was standing outside enjoying a beer and chatting with some other admitted students, when a very formal-looking middle-aged gentleman approached me and asked me whether I was coming to Tuck.
I was honest and said I was still making a choice between Tuck and another school.  The moment he realized I hadn’t decided on Tuck he started on a 15-minute sales pitch about why I should come to Tuck.  The alumni, the experiences, the friendships…I was amazed at his effort to influence my decision.  Here I was, rocking my beach wardrobe, and a senior partner from a Boston private equity firm (I asked for his card) was doing his darnedest to get me to choose Tuck.  Later I learned he was on the Tuck advisory board (these people are no slackers).  I was blown away; nothing like this happened at any of the other schools I visited.  And this guy drove out to Hanover on a weekend just so he could get me to attend Tuck!  While the whole of ASW made me confident Tuck was the right choice, this moment really sealed the deal for me.
