One of my favorite things about living in Charlottesville is the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of outdoor activities: camping, hiking, tubing, and my favorite, running. There is nothing better on a beautiful Charlottesville afternoon than to go for a run and explore the city. From road running to trails, Charlottesville has it all. Most of the streets have generous sidewalks, and you can take a run through the picturesque neighborhoods, the shops on the downtown mall, or through the University of Virginia Grounds. For those who prefer a different terrain, the Rivanna Trail system forms a 20-mile loop of wooded trails around the city of Charlottesville. Where else can you take a run past the Rotunda on the Lawn, a UNESCO World Heritage Site? When I first moved to Charlottesville, running helped me learn where everything is and made me feel like this town was becoming my home.

Charlottesville also has a strong running community. There are local running stores, like Ragged Mountain and Crozet Running and numerous races of various lengths. Last year I ran a trail half marathon through the mountains of Crozet and a couple four-mile races in town. There were lots of spectators along the courses, and of course, Bodos Bagels at the end to celebrate a successful finish.

My favorite running community has been the Darden Running Club (I am Co-President of the club this year, so I may be a little biased). We meet twice a week for runs before class. It’s been a great way to get to know other Darden students, share running tips, and get a good workout in amid the busy Darden schedule. We also participate in local races and running charity events.

Whatever your outdoor pursuit, Charlottesville has something for you. And for all you runners out there, you can find no better place to spend two years to get a world-class business education and experience world-class running than Darden!
